Officer James Hamlin joins a pursuit in progress. The fleeing Hyundai passes him going in the opposite direction. Officer Hamlin parallels the pursuit in an attempt to get in front of it and set up a roadblock. The fleeing driver, who is now riding on a front rim and throwing sparks, makes a few turns and is now coming right at Officer Hamlin. The Hyundai passes Officer Hamlin, narrowly missing his patrol car. The pursuit continues for a few more blocks until the car is on fire and can’t go any further. The driver exits the vehicle and lays down directly in front of the burning vehicle. The driver is pulled to safety and it is then discovered that there is a female in the back seat of the burning Hyundai. She is pulled out as the smoke engulfs the entire car. The driver is not cooperative and has very little to say. The female has inhaled a lot of smoke and is also very uncooperative. Both are transported to the hospital.

Why Law Enforcement | I majored in Criminal Justice and Sociology in College, sparking my interest in all area’s of the American Criminal Justice System. A couple of my college professor’s were retired Law Enforcement Officer’s (LEO’s), and they had some of the most amazing stories from the job. I decided to do a couple of ride-along’s with the local Police Department. Immediately, I knew Law Enforcement was for me. The job sold its self to me. |
First Arrest | My first arrest was while I was in the Field Training Program at the Adams County SO. My Field Training Officer (FTO) spotted a suspicious person running into a trailer park late at night. I attempted to stop the male and make contact, but he refused and ran from me. I engaged in a short foot pursuit before loosing sight of him. A few moments later, I heard the suspect as he was hiding underneath a large tarp. I remember being so nervous as I pointed my gun at him and gave him verbal commands to show his hands. My FTO had not found where I was at yet, and honestly I didn’t even know where I was at. The suspect hesitated to obey my commands, so I knew that was my moment. I holstered my weapon and pulled him from under the tarp. A brief struggle ensued but I was able to place him into handcuffs without any help. I remember thinking to my self, “this is both the scariest and best moment of my life.” Turned out, the suspect spotted our marked patrol vehicle and ran because he had active warrants for his arrest and was under the influence of methamphetamine. My FTO criticized me for going hands on so soon, but I was already celebrating the feeling of my first arrest. I’ll never forget that feeling or that moment. |
Best part of the job | The job has never had to justify its self to me, meaning I’ve never had to search for why the job is necessary or why it was a good career choice for me. The best part about that job has always been the fact that I am a part of the “thin blue line.” I protect society and people from evil while preventing chaos and maintaining order. |
Hobbies | Since I have lived in Colorado my whole life, I have developed several hobbies. In the winter, I enjoy snowboarding and the occasional snow camp trip. In the spring and summer I enjoy camping, hiking, mountain climbing, and 4-wheeling. |

Why Law Enforcement | I am following my father and grandfather’s footsteps. I feel this was a calling for me to help others and give back to the community I grew up in. |
First Arrest | The first arrest I can recall was a person driving a stolen car. I observed a car with no lights on at night and parked in the middle of a roadway in a high crime area. I ran the license plate and I received information the vehicle was stolen. I conducted a felony traffic stop with my partners and the driver was arrested for possessing a stolen vehicle. |
Best part of the job | The best part of my job is helping children. I absolutely love helping kids who are in poor situations and getting them into better situations. Children love police officers and always express their interest in my career. I always make sure to give them stickers, let them sit in the police vehicle and press all the buttons to see all the “cool” lights. |
Hobbies | I normally spend most of my time with my beautiful wife and two wonderful daughters. I do enjoy golfing whenever I am not busy with my children’s gymnastics and softball. |

Why Law Enforcement | Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be in a job where I served my community. The first time I truly realized I wanted to be a Cop was in High School. I had some pretty good role models around that time and afterward that made me want to go into law enforcement. |
First Arrest | My first memorable arrest, I was searching for a guy who fled a bar after assaulting someone. I located the suspect, and while moving in to detain him, he threw a haymaker at me then took off running. A foot pursuit ensued and I chased him about 100 yards before catching up to him and he started fighting again. Backup arrived, taser deployed, one in custody. |
Best part of the job | I love the proactive side of Police work. Going out and searching for badguys, and getting to put them in jail. |
Hobbies | I love the outdoors. I enjoy hunting, shooting, camping, golfing, etc. I also have a ’72 Chevelle in the garage that needs to get built one of these days. |
Favorite Quote | I am a big fan of K-9s and love it when they are referred to as a “Fur Missile.” |
